- 1912: Tolkien hält sich bei der Familie Gilson in Marston Green auf.[1]
- 1913: Tolkien folgt Rob Gilsons Einladung zu den Sportwettkämpfen der King Edward’s School und verbringt mehrere Tage bei der Familie Gilson in Marston Green; im Besucherbuch von Canterbury House trägt er seinen Namen und die Dauer des Aufenthalts ein.[2][3]
- 1916: Tolkiens Bataillon erreicht gegen ein Uhr nachts nach einem Marsch seine Quartiere in Warloy-Baillon.[4]
- 1916: Die Schlacht an der Somme beginnt. Tolkien und das 11. Bataillon der Lancashire Fusiliers liegen in Reserve und hören den Artilleriebeschuss; sein Freund Robert Quilter Gilson fällt bei La Boisselle.[5]
- 1920: Ein Ausschuss der Universität Leeds empfiehlt Tolkiens Ernennung zum Reader für englische Sprache.[6]
- 1922: Das Trimester an der Universität Leeds endet.[7]
- 1937: Tolkiens Vortrag Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics erscheint als Sir Israel Gollancz Memorial Lecture; Allen Mawer schreibt ihm noch am selben Tag anerkennend.[8]
- 1952: Rayner Unwin antwortet Tolkien in einem Brief. Er lobt Errantry, bittet um ein Exemplar des Herrn der Ringe zur erneuten Prüfung und bekräftigt das Veröffentlichungsinteresse des Verlags; außerdem stirbt Susan Dagnall, die den Hobbit für Allen & Unwin begutachtet hatte.[9]
- 1959: Tolkien hält sich als externer Prüfer der National University of Ireland in Irland auf.[10]
- 1959: Alina Dadlez leitet Tolkien einen Brief der polnischen Übersetzerin Maria Skibniewska weiter und teilt ihm mit, dass Allen & Unwin die hebräischen Übersetzungsrechte am Hobbit verkauft hat.[11]
- 1968: Phyllis Jenkinson schreibt Rayner Unwin im Auftrag Tolkiens, dass Tolkien mindestens bis zum 10. Juli im Krankenhaus bleiben werde.[12]
- 1972: Mythcon 3 findet in Long Beach in Kalifornien statt.
- 2004: The Lord of the Rings Symphony wird in der Jones Hall in Houston aufgeführt.
- 2006: Die Convention The Gathering of the Fellowship findet in Toronto statt.
- 2008: Tolkien On Fairy-stories erscheint.
- 2009: Der Tolkien Calendar 2010 und das Tolkien Diary 2010 erscheinen.
- 2011: Der Tolkien Calendar 2012 erscheint.
- 2018: Die Tolkien Society veranstaltet im Hilton in Leeds ein Seminar.
