Historische Ereignisse
- 1913: R. H. Gordon und J. R. R. Tolkien werden für das nächste Semester zum Präsidenten und zum Sekretär der Stapeldon Society gewählt. Tolkien fordert Strafen für den scheidenden Präsidenten, der während seiner Amtszeit nur zweimal an einer Sitzung der Gesellschaft teilgenommen hatte.[1]
- 1913: G. B. Smith, ebenso wie Tolkien Schüler der King Edward’s School, antwortet ihm auf einen Brief, den er am selben Morgen erhalten hatte. Er fragt ihn, wie er Möbel für seine Räume im Corpus Christi College in Oxford erhalten kann, da er zum Michaelmas Term 1913 dorthin wechseln wird.[1]
- 1930: Der amerikanische Science-Fiction- und Fantasy-Autor Lin Carter wird geboren.[2] Mit Tolkien: A Look Behind The Lord of the Rings veröffentlichte er 1969 eine der ersten umfangreichen kritischen Studien über Tolkiens Werk, das er als erster in den historischen Kontext der Fantasy stellt.[3]
- 1938: Tolkien und David Nichol Smith unterzeichnen ihren Bericht über die Prüfung von J. A. W. Bennett, den Tolkien verfasst hatte.[4]

- 1954: W. N. Beard schreibt einen Brief an J. R. R. Tolkien. Er schickt ihm Kopien der Druckerfahnen von Die Zwei Türme und die Fragen der Drucker auf losen Blättern.[8]

Er legt eine speziell für sie angefertigte Ausgabe von Leaf by Niggle bei und berichtet über den Hintergrund der Geschichte.[12]
- 1963: Die neuseeländische Schauspielerin Megan Edwards wird geboren.[13] In Der Herr der Ringe: Die Gefährten verkörpert sie eine Hobbitfrau, die der Familie Stolzfuß angehört.[14]
- 1966: Tolkien antwortet auf Rayner Unwins Brief vom 7. Juni. Er erwartet ihn um zehn Uhr morgens an Montag, dem 13. Juni in Oxford für ein Treffen.[15][16]
- 1966: Der britische Journalist und Autor John Garth wird geboren.[17] Mit Tolkien and the Great War: The Threshold of Middle-earth (dt. Tolkien und der Erste Weltkrieg, 2014) veröffentlichte er 2003 eine Studie über Tolkiene Erlebnisse unmittelbar vor, im und kurz nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg.[18]
- 1967: J. R. R. Tolkien schreibt einen Brief an den Verleger Victor Gollancz. Er antwortet auf dessen Anfrage, ein Empfehlungsschreiben für ein Buch eines Professors (?M. K.) Joseph anzufertigen, dass er zu beschäftigt und vom Buch nicht angezogen sei.[19]
- 2012: Der 26. Band der von Walking Tree Publishers herausgegebenen Cormarë Series, The Broken Scythe: Death and Immortality in the Works of J. R. R. Tolkien, wird veröffentlicht.[20][21]
