Historische Ereignisse
- 1916: Tolkien, Geoffrey Bache Smith und H. T. Wade-Gery essen in Bouzincourt zu Abend und geraten dabei unter Beschuss; Tolkien sieht Smith an diesem Tag zum letzten Mal.[1]
- 1936: Edith Mary „May“ Incledon stirbt.[2]
- 1944: Tolkien hält am Morgen eine Vorlesung und trifft C. S. Lewis, Warren Lewis und Charles Williams im King’s Arms, weil das Eagle and Child geschlossen ist.[3]
- 1944: Tolkien schreibt Brief 79 an Christopher Tolkien. Er berichtet vom Treffen mit den Inklings, beschreibt einen Sonnenuntergang und äußert sich zum kulturellen und geistigen Zustand der Gegenwart.[4]
- 1946: Tolkien speist mit Warren Lewis im Merton College und besucht anschließend mit ihm und Christopher Tolkien ein Treffen der Inklings; dort liest Tolkien aus The Drowning of Anadûnê.[5]
- 1953: Tolkien nimmt in Evesham an der Hochzeit seines Neffen Gabriel teil; John Tolkien leitet die Trauung.[6]
- 1955: Tolkien schreibt einen Brief an John Roberts. Er erläutert die Verzögerung von Die Rückkehr des Königs, die Anhänge, Karten und den gescheiterten Index und äußert sich zu Gollum.[7]
- 1962: Tolkien isst mit Stanley Unwin und Rayner Unwin zu Mittag und trifft die Vertriebsmitarbeiter von Allen & Unwin; Rayner zeigt ihm Pauline Baynes’ Illustrationen für Die Abenteuer des Tom Bombadil.[8]
- 1963: Der Tolkien-Linguist Édouard Kloczko wird geboren.[9]
- 1964: Tolkien schreibt einen Brief an Cor Blok. Er bespricht die geplante Ausstellung in Den Haag und mögliche eigene Beiträge.[10]
- 1967: Tolkiens erste Urenkelin Mandy, die Tochter von Joanna und Hugh Baker, wird geboren.[11]
