- 1913: R. H. Gordon und J. R. R. Tolkien werden für das nächste Semester zum Präsidenten und zum Sekretär der Stapeldon Society gewählt. Tolkien fordert Strafen für den scheidenden Präsidenten, der während seiner Amtszeit nur zweimal an einer Sitzung der Gesellschaft teilgenommen hatte.[1]
- 1913: G. B. Smith, ebenso wie Tolkien Schüler der King Edward’s School, antwortet ihm auf einen Brief, den er am selben Morgen erhalten hatte. Er fragt ihn, wie er Möbel für seine Räume im Corpus Christi College in Oxford erhalten kann, da er zum Michaelmas Term 1913 dorthin wechseln wird.[1]
- 1930: Der amerikanische Science-Fiction- und Fantasy-Autor Lin Carter wird geboren.[2] Mit Tolkien: A Look Behind The Lord of the Rings veröffentlichte er 1969 eine der ersten umfangreichen kritischen Studien über Tolkiens Werk, das er als erster in den historischen Kontext der Fantasy stellt.[3]

- 1967: J. R. R. Tolkien schreibt einen Brief an den Verleger Victor Gollancz. Er antwortet auf dessen Anfrage, ein Empfehlungsschreiben für ein Buch eines Professors (?M. K.) Joseph anzufertigen, dass er zu beschäftigt und vom Buch nicht angezogen sei.[17]
