Michael David Craig Drout,[1] geboren am 3. Mai 1968,[2] ist Professor für Englisch am Wheaton College im US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts[3]. Er beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit der altenglischen Sprache, der mittelalterlichen Literatur sowie mit Science Fiction und Fantasy, hier insbesondere mit den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens.[4]

Akademische Laufbahn

Michael Drout studierte an der Carnegie Mellon University (Abschluss als Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing and Creative Writing 1990), der Stanford University (Master of Arts in Communication (Journalism) 1991), der University of Missouri-Columbia (Master of Arts in English 1993) und der Loyola University Chicago (Doctor of Philosophy in English 1997). Von 1997 bis 2003 war er Assistant Professor für Englisch am Wheaton College, danach bis 2008 Associate Professor, seither Full Professor.[5]

Arbeiten zu Tolkien

Im Jahr 2002 gab Drout unter dem Titel Beowulf and the Critics eine wissenschaftliche Ausgabe zweier Manuskripte Tolkiens für eine Vorlesungsreihe über das Altenglische Werk Beowulf heraus, welche die Grundlage für Tolkiens Vortrag Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics bildeten.[6] Für das Buch wurde er 2003 mit dem Mythopeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies der Mythopoeic Society ausgezeichnet.[7] Eine überarbeite und erweiterte Ausgabe erschien im Jahr 2011.[8]

Michael Drout ist Herausgeber der 2006 erschienenen Tolkien-Enzyklopädie J. R. R. Tolkien Encyclopedia: Scholarship and Critical Assessment.[9]

Drout ist außerdem seit der Gründung des jährlich erscheinenden wissenschaftlichen Journals Tolkien Studies im Jahr 2004 dessen Mitherausgeber.[4]
