Verlyn Flieger, geboren am 24. Februar 1933,[1] ist emeritierte Professorin am Department of English an der University of Maryland in College Park im US-Bundesstaat Maryland.[2] Sie beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit vergleichender Mythologie und moderner Fantasy, hier insbesondere mit den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens.[2]

Akademische Laufbahn

Verlyn Flieger studierte Englische Literatur an der George Washington University in Washington, D.C., wo sie 1955 als Bachelor of Arts abschloss.[2] Sie führte später ihr Studium an der Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., fort, wo sie 1972 den Grad eines Master of Arts erreichte und im Jahr 1977 promovierte.[2] Seit 1976 lehrte sie an der University of Maryland, wo sie schließlich im Jahr 2012 als Professorin emeritiert wurde.[2]

Arbeiten zu Tolkien

Im Jahr 1983 veröffentlichte Verlyn Flieger mit ihrem Buch Splintered Light: Logos and Language in Tolkien's World eine der ersten Studien zu Tolkiens Silmarillion. Eine komplett überarbeitete Ausgabe erschien 2002. Für A Question of Time: J. R. R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie wurde Flieger 1998 mit dem Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies der Mythopoeic Society ausgezeichnet.

2002 gewann sie erneut den Mythopeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies, für Tolkien's Legendarium: Essays on The History of Middle-earth, einer Sammlung von Aufsätzen verschiedener Autoren zur History of Middle-earth, die Flieger zusammen mit Carl F. Hostetter herausgab. Ihre dritte Monografie zu Tolkien erschien 2005 unter dem Titel Interrupted Music: The Making of Tolkien's Mythology.

Verlyn Flieger ist zusammen mit Michael D. C. Drout und Douglas A. Anderson Herausgeberin des seit 2004 jährlich erscheinenden wissenschaftlichen Journals Tolkien Studies.

Im Jahr 2005 veröffentlichte Flieger eine kommentierte Ausgabe von Tolkiens Smith of Wootton Major. 2008 erschien eine kommentierte Ausgabe von Tolkiens Aufsatz On Fairy-Stories, die sie zusammen mit Douglas Anderson herausgab.
