Verlyn Flieger studierte Englische Literatur an der George Washington University in Washington, D.C., wo sie 1955 als Bachelor of Arts abschloss. Sie führte ihr Studium an der Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. fort. Dort erreichte sie 1972 den Grad eines Master of Arts und machte 1977 ihren Doctor of Philosophy. Anschließend begann sie ihre Lehrtätigkeit an der University of Maryland. Von 1978 bis 1984 war sie Assistant Professor, dann bis 1997 Associate Professor (entspricht in etwa einer deutschen außerordentlichen Professorin), seit 1998 ist sie Full Professor (ordentliche Professorin).

Seit der Gründung des seit 2004 jährlich erscheinenden wissenschaftlichen Journals Tolkien Studies ist sie dessen Mitherausgeberin.[9] Bereits zuvor, im Jahr 2000, gab sie zusammen mit Carl F. Hostetter eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen verschiedener Autoren zur History of Middle-earth heraus, unter dem Titel Tolkien’s Legendarium: Essays on The History of Middle-earth.[10] Zudem hat Flieger schon zwei Mal erweiterte und kommentierte Ausgaben von Werken Tolkiens herausgegeben: im Jahr 2005 eine solche von Smith of Wootton Major,[11] und 2008 zusammen mit Douglas A. Anderson eine Ausgabe von Tolkiens Aufsatz On Fairy-stories.[12]

Für ihre Arbeiten zu den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens wurde Verlyn Flieger drei mal mit dem Mythopoeic Scholarship Award in Inklings Studies der Mythopoeic Society ausgezeichnet, nämlich 1998 für A Question of Time, 2002 für Tolkien’s Legendarium und 2013 für Green Suns and Faërie.[13] Ihre Werke Interrupted Music (2006–2008), Smith of Wootton Major (2006) und Tolkien on Fairy-stories (2009 und 2011) waren teils mehrmals für den Preis nominiert.[13]
