Verlyn Flieger ist vielfach als Autorin und Herausgeberin zu den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens in Erscheinung getreten. Schon in ihrer Doktorarbeit von 1977 beschäftigte sie sich mit Tolkiens Herrn der Ringe.[4] Später veröffentlichte sie drei Monografien zu Tolkiens Werken: Splintered Light: Logos and Language in Tolkien's World[5] im Jahr 1983 (überarbeitete Ausgabe 2002), A Question of Time: J. R. R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie[6] im Jahr 1997 und Interrupted Music: The Making of Tolkien's Mythology[7] im Jahr 2005. Außerdem hat Flieger in verschiedenen Publikationen zahlreiche Aufsätze zu Tolkiens Werken veröffentlicht. Eine Auswahl erschien 2012 in der Sammlung Green Suns and Faërie: Essays on J. R. R.
