Ursprünglich der Titel des dritten Bandes und der letzten beiden Bücher des Herrn der Ringe. Der Titel wurde auch in der Filmtrilogie und für das Computerspiel übernommen.
J.R.R. Tolkien mochte diesen Titel eigentlich nicht, da er der Meinung war, dass er zuviel über das Ende der Handlung verrate. Wäre es nach Tolkien gegangen, hätte dieser Band "Der Ringkrieg" geheißen.
