Yoko Inokuma wurde als älteste Tochter des Dichters Taeko Kuzuhara geboren. Sie studierte an der privaten Tokioter University of the Sacred Heart für Frauen und verbrachte ein Auslandssemester an der Universität [[Oxford]]. Nach ihrem Abschluss ging sie lange Zeit einer Lehrtätigkeit nach und war seit den neunziger Jahren bis zu ihrem Ruhestand 2001 Professorin an der katholischen Shirayuri Women's University in Tokio.<br />

Bekannt wurde Yoko Inokuma insbesondere durch ihre Übersetzungen von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur von Autorinnen, wie Rosemary Sutcliff, Mary Norton, Philippa Pearce und Edith Nesbit.<br />

Von [[J. R. R.
