	Tom Shippey besuchte von 1954 bis 1960 die King Edward’s School in Birmingham, auf die etwa fünfzig Jahre früher auch Tolkien gegangen war. Anschließend studierte er an der Universität von Cambridge, wo er 1968 den Grad eines Master of Arts erreichte. 1990 folgte ein Doktortitel derselben Universität. Von 1972 bis 1979 lehrte er am St. John’s College in Oxford Alt- und Mittlenglisch~~. Hier lernte~~ er bei einem Treffen J. R. R. Tolkien kennen, der damals am Oxforder Merton College lebte. Tom Shippey wechselte dann an die Universität von Leeds und übernahm dort die Professur für Englische Sprache und Mittelalterliche Englische Literatur, die Tolkien in den Zwanziger Jahren innegehabt hatte. Nach vierzehn Jahren in Leeds ging er in die Vereinigten Staaten an die Saint Louis University, wo er den Walter J. Ong Chair of Humanities übernahm. Ihm zu Ehren erschien 2007 die von Andrew Wawn herausgegebene Schrift ''Constructing Nations, Reconstructing Myth: Essays in Honour of T. A. Shippey''.
